Job Description
The Vision Systems Engineer will support FiveFocal optics and camera development projects as a technical resource and will manage the integration of cameras and other instruments within FiveFocal’s internal framework for test, analysis, and data management. The engineer will also contribute to the design and implementation of this internal framework by developing software modules and framework for integrating cameras, automated test and production equipment, image analysis and signal processing algorithms, and data acquisition devices to support various customers and projects. Experience with transferring from pure software algorithms to embedded or GPU processor is advantageous. Demonstrated experience managing projects and technical personnel is a plus.
Work is performed in a small team environment with diverse projects ranging from concept to product transition. The position requires broad experience in camera, computer, and embedded systems engineering with a focus on adaptation and innovative problem solving for advanced optical system solutions. The candidate must be self-driven, comfortable executing on decisions in his/her area of expertise and also have strong follow-through on assignments for fast-moving high tech projects. Ideal candidate would be one who thrives on solving new or unfamiliar problems, welcomes responsibility for a variety of activities, is able to make decisions in ambiguous situations, and can trouble-shoot problems independently.
Responsibilities
- Develop software interfaces for data acquisition and management
- Manage internal libraries supporting various instrument platforms
- Develop image processing algorithms
- Select camera and data acquisition hardware
Requirements
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in electrical/computer engineering, physics, optics or equivalent discipline is required.
- Experience: This senior engineering position requires at least 7 years experience.
- Technical: Extensive experience required in: object oriented C/C++ coding for general algorithm, image processing, and data manipulation, along with MATLAB interface development (MEX functions), and writing C/C++ interfaces to external hardware, e.g. test instrumentation, cameras, data acquisition cards.
- The ideal candidate would also be experienced with OpenCV, Boost, Qt, SQL, Git/SVN, Doxygen
- Familiarity with image feature detection and matching for 3D modeling and ranging applications would be particularly advantageous
- Familiarity with microcontroller and computer level communications protocols, interfacing embedded systems, and programming GP/GPU, microprocessors and FPGAs is desired.
- Skills: Strong understanding of engineering concepts and an analytical approach are important. Ability to find creative solutions to problems is valued highly. Good communication and people skills, strong organizational abilities, and the capacity to work independently and manage projects and resources is required.

This Senior Optical Engineering position will focus on the design and development of test-equipment for the analysis of optical systems and components. The position will support FiveFocal optical system development projects as the lead technical resource developing test equipment, procedures, and a laboratory framework for the analysis of cameras, optical components, and systems. The engineer will be required to coordinate and supervise technical resources, develop and manage testing programs for prototype and production articles within the context of large multi-year development programs. Past experience with optical/opto-mechanical component assembly and metrology, system level performance validation, and environmental performance testing is required. Demonstrated experience managing projects, vendors, and technical personnel is a plus.

- Experience: The Senior Engineer position requires at least 7 years experience.
- Technical: Expertise with metrology and test equipment, cameras, interferometers, light sources, etc. Optical modeling and analysis experience using OSLO, Code V, Zemax, or FRED. Modeling, data analysis, and data acquisition using Python, MATLAB, or Mathematica. Experience in opto-mechanical design is a plus.
- Skills: Strong understanding of engineering concepts and an analytical approach are important. Ability to find creative solutions to problems is valued highly. Good communication and people skills, strong organizational abilities, and ability to multitask and work independently.
