In 2009, FiveFocal brought together a group of key individuals with rich backgrounds in bringing innovative technologies to both the commercial and defense markets with the goal of creating novel design methodologies, test tools, algorithms and imaging systems.
Kenny Kubala has 12 years of experience in the design, manufacturing and test of optical imaging systems. In addition to being recognized as a world class designer of computational optical systems, he has published 20 papers and has 36 issued or pending patents in the areas of non-conventional optics and computational imaging. He graduated from the University of Arizona with a B.S. in Optical Engineering, from the University of Colorado with an M.S. and PhD in Electrical Engineering with a strong emphasis in optics.
Hans (Huck) Wach specializes in design and validation of system-level optimized imaging systems and related development tools. His experience includes image processing algorithms and image quality metrics supporting products in biometrics, machine vision, multi-spectral imaging, microscopy, and IR applications. He is versed in root cause/failure analysis, system analysis, and software development using MATLAB, ZEMAX, and C/C++. Huck is a graduate of University of Colorado with a B.S. in Electrical Engineering and a PhD in Optical/Signal Processing.
Alan Baron is a successful entrepreneur having founded startups delivering cutting edge technologies to industrial and biomedical applications via products, licenses, and acquisitions with commercial partners. With 15 years of technology management experience, his commercialization and product development expertise spans computational imaging applications, biomedical / industrial chemical sensors, and aerospace technologies, with 3 issued patents in these fields. He graduated from the University of Washington with a PhD in Analytical Chemistry.
Rob Bates has over 10 years experience in design, analysis, manufacturing, and validation of advanced optical systems. He has in-depth knowledge of mobile cameras, for which he led the design of multi-megapixel wafer-level lenses, wide FOV compact endoscopes, and extended depth of field systems. An expert user of Zemax, CodeV, OSLO, and FRED optics software, his broad design experience ranges from miniature camera lenses to multi-channel reflective telescopes bound for space. He graduated from the University of Arizona with a M.S. in Optical Science, with emphasis on design desensitization to manufacturing errors.
